An informational meeting concerning the proposed installation of a Youth <br />Home on South Ave. was held on May 1~ 1975 at 7:00 P.M. in the American <br />Legion Hall. <br /> <br />Present: Mayor Synnett~ Tr. Dolan~ Tr. Bain~ Tr. Silvestri, T~. Short <br />Atty. Lyons. <br />Absent: Tr. gelding and Tr. DiBerto, <br /> <br />Mr. Valachovic, resident of South Ave., presented Board with a petition <br />opposing home for the following reasores: <br />1. House would be taken off active Assessment roll <br />2. Property is zoned for 4 roomers which would be a violation of Zoning Law. <br />3. This was the lit public meeting on this subject. <br /> <br />Mr. Yalachovic inquired as to how problems were handled prior to the opening <br />of these homes. <br />He stated there were schools for children with problems and this was a <br />dumping area for New York City. <br />Mr. Valachovic discussed homes already operating in Poughkeepsie and stated <br />Village was told that no home would be established in a community if there <br />were objections. <br />He also stated a false statement apveared in the Poughkeepsie Journal <br />concerning a Division for Youth employee being forced out of a meeting. <br /> <br />Mr. Winoski (If the Division for Youth, reported he never made statement <br />that the State would back off if they were not wanted by the community. <br />He stated they weren't bringing in animals, but children. <br /> <br />Mrs. Caaner of the D.C. Youth Board reported homes are established by <br />the NYS Division for Youth. <br />She discussed operations of other homes located in Poughkeepsie and <br />repo~ted youths are from Ducthess County. <br />Mrs. Casner reported children needed this type of service and this was <br />previously brought up at a public meeting. <br /> <br />Mayor Synnett discussed the facts which were previously presented at meetings. <br />He stated he invited State and County representatives to this meeting in <br />an effort to resolve differences. Mayor Synnett reported no one was being <br />slighted and Village wanted to know what type of children would occupy <br />this type of home. <br /> <br />Mr. Winoski introduced directors of proposed home who have had two years <br />experience, <br />He inquired what happendd when any child goes astray. <br />Mr. Winoski reported youngsters are screened and have no delinguent record. <br /> <br />Mr. Valachovlc stated main complaint was method of approach. He stated <br />there were 79 children in neighborhood and situation may be explosive. <br /> <br />Mr. Winoski inquired if any bad reports had been heard about the program <br />in its 2~ yr. existence and Mr. Valachovic replied no. <br /> <br /> <br />
